Consciousness: energy?

My own idea of consciousness is of an energy that is a kind of side effect of the structure of our brains. The problem with that though, is that if our brains evolved into its present structure in order to adapt to the environment (given our other limitations); then understanding how this brain gives rise to consciousness, as a side effect, must accompany some description of why the brain is adaptive in its present state.
